Nautical Terms and Phrases

The letters of the alphabet are listed with their corresponding phonetic alphabet term. The phonetic alphabet is used when spelling terms over a radio so that the listener does not confuse one letter for another.

A - Alpha N - November
B - Bravo O - Oscar
C - Charlie P - Papa
D - Delta Q - Quebec
E - Echo R - Romeo
F - Foxtrot S - Sierra
G - Golf T - Tango
H - Hotel U - Uniform
I - India V - Victor
J - Juliet W - Whiskey
K - Kilo X - X-Ray
L - Lima Y - Yankee
M - Mike Z - Zulu




Yacht A pleasure vessel, a pleasure boat; in American usage the idea of size and luxury is conveyed, either sail or power.
Yankee A fore-sail flying above and forward of the jib, usually seen on bowsprit vessels.
Yard A spar attached to the mast and used to hoist square sails.
Yard Arm The end of a yard.
Yaw To swing or steer off course, as when running with a quartering sea.
Yawl A two masted boat with a smaller mast stepped abaft of the helm.
