The letters of the alphabet are listed with their corresponding phonetic alphabet term. The phonetic alphabet is used when spelling terms over a radio so that the listener does not confuse one letter for another. The terms will show up below the list of letters when you click a letter. |

| Unbend | To cast adrift. |
| Underway | Vessel in motion, i.e., when not moored, at anchor, or aground. |
| Unfurl | To unfold or unroll a sail. The opposite of furl. |
| Union | The upper inner corner of an ensign. The rest of the flag is called the fly. The union of the U.S. ensign is a blue field with white stars, and the fly is composed of alternate white and red stripes. |
| Union Jack | A small flag, containing only the union, without the fly, usually hoisted at the bowsprit-cap. |
| Union-down | The situation of a flag when it is hoisted upside down, bringing the union down instead of up. Used as a signal of distress. |
| Unmoor | To heave up one anchor so that the vessel may ride at a single anchor. |
| Upwind | To windward, in the direction of the eye of the wind. |
| USCG | Common abbreviation for United States Coast Guard. |
| USNS | Abbreviation for United States Naval Ship. |
| USS | Abbreviation for United States Ship. |
| USSA | Common abbreviation for United States Sailing Association. |
| USYRU | Abbreviation for: United States Yacht Racing Union |
