Nautical Terms and Phrases

The letters of the alphabet are listed with their corresponding phonetic alphabet term. The phonetic alphabet is used when spelling terms over a radio so that the listener does not confuse one letter for another.

Kedge Anchor A light anchor used for kedging off.
Kedging Off Freeing a grounded boat by hauling in on an anchor line that has been secured in deeper water by a dinghy
Keel The centerline of a boat running fore and aft; the backbone of a vessel.
Keelson A structure of timbers or steel beams that are bolted to the top of a keel to increase its strength. Also spelled kelson.
Keep Her Full To keep the sails full and drawing.
Ketch A sailboat with two masts. The shorter mizzen mast is aft of the main mast, but forward of the rudder post. A similar vessel, the yawl, has the mizzen mast aft of the rudder post.
King Post A strong vertical post used to support a ship's windlass and the heel of a ship's bowsprit. Also called a sampson post.
King Spoke Marked top spoke on a wheel when the rudder is centered.
Knee A timber or metal bar fashioned into a right angle to provide strengthening and support at the intersection of timbers in wooden ships.
Knockabout A type of schooner without a bowsprit.
Knockdown When a boat is knocked on her beam-ends by a sudden gust or squall, especially under spinnaker.
Knot A measure of speed equal to one nautical mile (6076 feet) per hour.
