Are Cruise Lines Getting a Bad Name?

By:
January 31, 2014

It's been recently reported that a second major cruise ship has a problem with sick passengers and crew members, with the most recent one aboard the Caribbean Princess. The cause of the outbreak is norovirus, which is known to spread very easily and can causes diarrhea and vomiting.

Although initial reports suggest the outbreak is only affecting a little over 5% of the passengers, it is still cause for concern after the Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas reported over 20% contamination just days ago and had to return home 2 days early.

The Royal Caribbean's number was the highest reported for any cruise ship in around 20 years.

So the big question is, will this have an overall effect on people's perception of cruises and will the industry take a hit going forward?

My guess would be that in the long run, cruise ships will do just fine.

Cruises offer a great opportunity to travel to many locations in a short amount of time and people will be willing to take the small risk for the chance at an experience of a lifetime. After all, there is some risk in pretty much everything we do, isn't there?
